I specialize in providing managed web business sites, and this site is designed to help you learn how to provide or source all the technical tools you need to manage technical aspects of your website.
My advice and support services are strongly biased towards WordPress, but much of this will apply to any hosting platform.
I provide a complete range of hosting support services and web business management services so that you can choose to manage everything yourself, or let me manage some or all of your services so that you can focus on growing your business.
If you are looking for complete, managed packages, please see my Web Business Prices at shrewdies.com. If you want to cover some or all technical aspects, read on…
I give all my technical advice and support on the basis that you have a proper web business blueprint (or similar structured site plan for non-profits and community organizations). This is a goal-driven plan of site topics, structured to maximize traffic-building and optimize visitor attraction. If you do not have one, you should visit shrewdies.com to learn how to build one, or persuade me to do it for you.
Free WordPress Web Hosting
WordPress.com offers a free hosting service for your web business. Some of my technical advice for integrating reporting tools, and configuring your website installation will apply, but most of the work is done for you. There are serious restrictions on commercial intent, so this option is not really suitable for most web business ventures.
I am creating alternatives to WordPress.com that include more traffic-building tools, and allow complete commercial freedom (within the bounds of legality, morality, and sanity – yes, there is a sanity clause!). Contact me if you want to learn more before I launch this formally.
Inexpensive WordPress Web Hosting
I do not provide physical hardware, as it only makes commercial sense to do this on a large scale. There are thousands of web hosting companies, offering a vast array of services to suit every pocket. Beware the very cheap solutions. There is a substantial cost to you, way beyond the cost of the hosting service, if you lose public access to your web business.
In the UK, I recommend NativeSpace.co.uk, and have found them to be very reliable, cost effective, and user-friendly. Yes, that is an affiliate link, so if you begrudge me a few pennies, just type the name directly into your browser – you still pay the same.
In the US, despite recommendations from WordPress.org, I have found BlueHost to be quite incompetent for anything beyond a very basic WordPress blog, and impossible for Question2Answer integration. JustHost seemed like an option, but only supply very basic setups. Once you get beyond a few hundred visitors per day, you blow their unpublished limits, and get switched off until you upgrade to a different company. They do not offer the upgrade before you break the limit, or warn you when getting near. Absolutely not what you want just when you are starting to make an impact.
I cannot recommend DreamHost.com. I will explain the better alternatives, when I have finished testing.
Managed WordPress Web Hosting
If you want me to setup and manage your site for you, please contact me. From a simple site to promote your existing business (from £120 per year), or a full-blown web business (from £220 per year) to let you earn money when you want to work. I can’t fix a price until I know more details about your plans, but I can promise prices that are a tiny fraction of what you will earn. See my Web Business Prices for more details.
So there you have it. Inexpensive, reliable ways to get started with your website, and the rest of this site to help you build yours. No excuses for not starting your website today, but if you do have problems, I’m here to help you.
